Released in 1975, “Bang-A-Boomerang” predates ABBA’s international superstardom. It wasn’t even sung by the iconic foursome themselves! Originally, the song was intended for a different Swedish act, Svenne & Lotta. However, the melody and playful energy were so infectious that ABBA recorded their own instrumental demo, showcasing the infectious melody and sparkling production that would become their hallmark.
While the demo remained unreleased, the songwriting team behind ABBA, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, along with lyricist Stig Anderson, saw potential in the track. They reworked the lyrics for Svenne & Lotta, adapting them into Swedish with the title “Bang en Boomerang.” This version, featuring a slightly shorter runtime to meet Eurovision contest regulations, became their entry for the 1975 competition. Sadly, “Bang en Boomerang” didn’t secure them victory, but it did serve as a stepping stone on their path to international fame.
The English version, “Bang-A-Boomerang”, remained unreleased for the general public for many years. However, for dedicated ABBA fans, the song held a certain mystique.
